Wrocław has come a long way from the devastation it experienced during World War II to emerging as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland. Walking through the city's streets, you will understand why Wrocław was awarded the much-anticipated title of European Capital of Culture in 2016 and why it was set to host the World Games in 2017.

You must keep a close eye out for the dwarfs! These mischievous little statuettes appear in all sorts of unexpected places throughout the city, creating a wealth of interesting photographic opportunities. These small creatures play an important role in traditional Polish folklore, having served as a playful form of peaceful anti-government protest during the turbulent 1980s.

Strolling through the popular Old Town is a wonderful way to explore its cobbled streets, local canals and historic bridges. The very heart of Wrocław has its own market square, at the centre of which stands the European Cross of Peace and a monument to Aleksander Fredro - one of the most outstanding figures in Polish literature.

As a nod to a modern approach to social issues, you should visit the Awangarda Gallery. This thought-provoking art gallery is a recreation of the Hatzfeld Palace, which was destroyed during World War II. You can also take in a fascinating show at the Centennial Hall, one of Poland's architectural landmarks. Designed in the early years of the last century, the hall has become home to numerous art exhibitions, concerts and major sporting events. Wrocław Zoo and the breathtakingly beautiful Japanese Gardens round out the list of top attractions to visit during your stay in the city.

If your travel itinerary allows, it is well worth including a day trip to Ostrów Tumski to visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as Książ Castle — a majestic palace perched high above the Pełcznica river.

Finally, we highly recommend the spectacular Wrocław Fountains, which combine water, colour and light to create animated images that change in time with the music being played. It is a sight you will remember long after your return from Wrocław.
